During the rise of the COVID-19 pandemic, I watched the small businesses and restaurants of Richmond, Virginia begin to close like falling dominoes. With the efforts many made to stay open in some capacity, offer each other assistance and provide some sense of normalcy, I was inspired to depict each one in their humbleness and charm.
After a year of operating Mad Kitchen Co. in Richmond, I relocated to San Diego, CA, where I began to illustrate local neighborhoods, much like I did in VA. The artistic challenge presented was conveying uniqueness of structures and textures despite the nearly total lack of exterior brick and wood utilized in Southern California.
